An exceptional necklace by Van Cleef & Arpels that dates back to the 1960’s, designed with an opulence of high quality round and baguette cut diamonds weighing a total of 70 carats, centering two drop shaped motifs filled with vibrant rubies placed using the iconic VCA mystery-set technique. The ‘Mystery-Set’ technique was invented by Van Cleef & Arpels in 1933, which is a technique used for setting gemstones in a specific way so that no prongs are visible. The design is so intricate that producing a single clip takes approximately 300 hours. Each faceted stone is gently placed onto thin gold rails measuring less than two-tenths of a millimeter wide. When the technique is complete, the gems appear to be entirely free-standing. The process is so complex making Mystery Set pieces extremely rare.
