VAN CLEEF & ARPELS Bouquet Hawai Early Clip Brooch in 18k Yellow and Rose Golds.
An important clip brooch by Van Cleef & Arpels, this piece set the stage for the Maison’s iconic series to follow. Fashioned in 1938, this is an early rendition of the Bouquet Hawai, ubiquitous of the 1940s and also carried into motifs of the 1950s. The design gained popularity after its World’s Fair debut in 1939, paired with the famous Passe-Partout – a multi-purpose item of jewelry for the modern woman. Delicately formed gold leaves with a spray of atmospheric Hawaii flowers are misted throughout, intended to be worn alone or on a tubogas chain. The Hawaii’s recognizable five-petal flower is comprised of blue sapphires with red rubies formed around a white diamond pistil and often set in varying tiers. The floating quality of this particular bouquet brilliantly contrasts the solidity of its stem, with select few florets spinning like a pinwheel. We love the whimsical, joyous vision of how this Hawaii brooch was imagined, as well as the playful quality it imposes on fine jewels. A truly magnificent work that is a pillar of the Maison.
